07-04-09 'Blackpool Gazette' - Small firms thrown rates relief lifeline
HUNDREDS of businesses across the Fylde have seen their rates bills slashed by up to a half. A review by local councils examined more than 1,000 businesses in a bid to bail out those experiencing problems because of the credit crunch. Rate relief was introduced in England from 2005 and applies to bill payers who occupy a property with a rateable value of less then £15,000. The process requires a local taxation manager to visit the business and carry out a review before deciding how much they can cut their business rates by. One of the businesses to benefit in Wyre is Bourne Newsagents in Thornton, which had its rate bills cut in half. For more information on small business rate relief, visit www.wyrebc.gov.uk or call (01253) 891000.
